The Southern Cross boiler by O’Brien Boilers is noted for its efficiency, economy of operation, rapid steaming ability and compact design.

It is designed and manufactured to AS1228 and meets the requirements of AS2593 Table 1.1 for unattended operation. Southern Cross features three pass flue gas circulation, tubeless construction, fully suspended combustion chamber, vertical disposition, and the absence of refractory.

Three Pass System

As illustrated, high temperature flue gases travel upward in the first pass, allowing the walls of the cylindrical surface of furnace to absorb heat from the radiant flame and transfer it to the surrounding water wall. In the second pass, hot flue gases travel downward through a number of narrow passages formed by the fins attached to the external wall of the boiler drum. In the third pass the gases again travel upward through similar narrow passages prior to being exhausted through the chimney. Having three passes ensures maximum heat yield (in excess of 80%) and minimal loss. An additional (optional) economizer is mounted at the exhaust after the flue opening allowing maximum 3% increase in boiler efficiency. Additional feature is the cleaning port for exhaust allowing for oil fuel operation.
